MINING INTELLIGENCE.

The Lakes. —There is a considerable improvement noticeable in mining matters generally. A healthier spirit seems to prevail alike in alluvial and quartz mining circles. Both Messrs Southberg and the Nugget Quartz Mining Company are reported to have met wi hj more encouraging results of late. In the alluvial the most improved feeling exhibited is in favor of river mining. One company has been formed, and others are on the tapis. These ventures are not speculative ones; we mean they are not for share-broking purposes. They are held bona fide, and are chiefly intended to permit of these claims being worked under a more defined and secure way to each individual shareholder. There is not so defined an improvement in terrace and sluicing claims. The good claims long known continue to give the well ascertained returns, but they do not seem to extend the field of operations; and the conflict of opinions as to the Shotover Gold Mining Company’s working value does not tend to make the tone in the direction of that part of the district livelier. —* Mail.’ Shotover. —The manager of the Shotover Terrace Gold Mining Company reports, under date Febniary 13, as follows The delay in commencing the regular work frem the time promised has been unavoidable, and by reason of difficulties arising from bringing the water through the tunnels which have been driven through Eagar’s claim for that purpose. To meet the requirement and the deep lead passed over, it was found necessary to deepen the level, which is now being done and will probably be completed in three weeks. All other works are ready as soon as w.-»ter is brought in. The prospects on the ground opened by me in the south part of the mine are good. In the north, there remains most of the washdirt to be lifted as the deepening of the tunnel advances. So far as I have seen of the original faces, under the altered system of working, they will be profitable.”
