CRICKET.
THE CUP MATCHES. The Merchant and Agents v. the World was finished on Saturday. The World cannot be complimented on their punctuality—nor is it creditable that there should be continued disputes as to the conditions on which these matches are played. Once again we ark the committee of the Dunedin Cricket Club to lay down for the conduct < f the cup matches, rules which shall not admit of misinterpretation, and be strictly enforced. Watson and Rattray appeared at the wickets to do battle for the Merchants, but the former succumbed to one of Paramor’s almost immediately. Meares joined Rattray, the result of the partnership being considerable leather hunting for the field. Forty-two was run before Rattray hit out and sent Pararaor well away, but be was mistaken, for the bowler secured it with a fine effort. Rattray’s fifteen were carefully got. Two for 42 looked like a gift of the match to the Merchants j but alas for the uncertainty of the game. Half-a-dozen good men went in, but only scored ten between them. Though there was no possible chance of Muir and Kennedy pulling together the necessary number to save a defeat, the former did his little best to win, and by characteristic slogging soon got into double figures, when Kennedy was run ont through over-eagerness to get runs. The innings terminated for 81 runs, the World winning by 15. The following are the scores : Merchants and Agents,—Second Innings.
