The Golden Age was employed yesterday in taking cargo from the Mongol to Dunedin, She was detained for four hours in quarantine before being allowed to fetch away her first load. The 8.8. Beautiful Star steamed down alongside the ship Margaret Galbraith for tranship- ‘ Bento, and will sail for her usual trip to Lyttelton this evening. The s.B. Wanganui transhipped to-day from the Dunfillan and Lutterworth, and sails for the South this evening. The s.s. Taranaki left'for the Northern ports at 5 p.m, yesterday. With regard to the late series of accidents by which the Titan, Waipara, and Florence went ashore at Hokitika, the * Register’ of February 11 says“ Yesterday, as the tug Titan was towing in the schooner Florence, from Lyttelton, the force of the current, which was running south, caused the tug to ground on the South Spit. The schooner hoisted sail, and endeavored to escape to sea, but the current vraa too strong, and, the wind dying away, she was stranded to the southward of where the Titan is lying. Unfortunately, we have another shipping casualty to chronicle. The steamers Waipara and Wallace arrived off the par about five o’clock, and the signal, “Ebb tide, current running very strong,” was made to them. The Waipara first essayed the bar, and was a considerable time in the break. Eventually the southerly current proved too strong, and this smart little steamer was and is piled up on the beach, some distance south of where the Florence grounded. Her position is very critical, and it is scarcely probable she will be got off without some expense. Thep.s. Wallace followed the Waipara, and grounded on the outer bank, but managed, with some difficult, to steam stera first out of her unpleasant position, otherwise it is certain she would have met with the fate of her unfortunate predecessor. She, however, got safely out to the roadstead.”
The barque Bobycito, previously reported at the Heads, was towed up this morning by the Geelong, and brought up at the lower anchorage, as she is expected to discharge her cargo of coal into the steamship Mongol. Captain Websdale reports leaving Newcastle on the sth instant, with moderate N.W. and S.W. winds ttntil making the West Cape on the 12th, then N. and N.B. winds; came through Foveaux Straits last Sunday, and was off the Nuggets «n Monday, and arrived off the Heads yesterday morning, Reports passing the brig Wave, off the Nuggets, and a whaler (ship) which was hove-to, on Saturday, trying out. The Boby•Ito was in the company of a great number of whales off the S.W. cape, The s.s. Wallabi came down from Dunedin to-day, and took on board transhipments from the Dunfillan for the Molyneux. The coasters Mermaid, from Waikouaiti, Defiance, from Moeraki, and Huon Belle, from Gatlin’s River, arrived yesterday. After towing up the barque Bobycito, the Gee • long proceeded down and brought up the threemasted schooner Agnes Jessie. Captain Ledwell reports leaving Hobart Town on the 10th inst,, with easterly winds, until getting clear of the land, on the 12th; thence N. and N.E. wind until making Stewart Island on the 16th, having had a fine run across ; when abreast of Stewart Island encountered a heavy gale from the N. VV., which blew the fore-topsail to shreds and the mizen gaff-topsail out of the caskets. The gale moderated after about three hours; then calms and light N. and N.W. grinds along the Coast; was off the Nuggets at » *.m. yesterday, and arrived at the Heads in “temoon. After landing twelve horses at the Port, she will proceed to Dunedin to discharge her cargo of floating timber. The ship Dover Castle, for Newcastle, was towed to sea by the Geelong this morning. THE CALIFORNIAN MAIL STEAMER TARTAR. The steamship Tartar, which will be de- § latched from Sydney with next outward-going an Francisco mail, is a magnificent ship. She was built by Messrs Dobie and Co., at Glasgow, last year, and is a fine specimen of naval arcliitecture. Her length over all is 300 ft, her beam 37ft. her depth of hold 30ft, and her height be6ft Tin. Her registered tonnage Is 1,475 tons. She is three-masted, schoonerand is painted black with a white stripe, and when laden in proper trim draws 22ft of water aft. The saloon accommodation is excellenXi?ll?ng .? mple room for fif ty passengers, and the furniture, made of bird’s-eye maple, is very handsome The ladies’ cabin is especially comfortable. The Tartar is commanded by Captain F ivies, and carries four dcck-officers. five engineers, a doctor, and a crew to make the fuu complement of hands sixty-seven. The engines, which are of 400-horse power, are the production of Messrs Howden and Co., the weli-Jtnown Glasgow engineering firm. They are on the patent compound principle, with surface eondensers, the high-pressure cylinder in diameter, and the low pressure -X¥, 9tr " ke “ “fft and the screw is one of Griffith s patent four bladed. There are three boilers, which are heated by twelve furnaces. Besides the saloon accommodation there is room for 500 passengers ’tween decks; The Tartar is a fast boat, her average speed, including all weathers, being eleven knots an hour.
