THE COUNTRY.

Oamaru.— As Valentine’s day is nigh at hand, missives, loving or uncomplimentary, are as pltntiful as blackberries in autumn. Of the latter class, several, with very objectionable subscriptions, have been traced to a youth who has probably by this time received a sharp reminder that he ought to find some better means of employing his time.—The cutting of crop at Windsor Park is nearly completed ; of 2,000 acres grain, all but fiftygacres being down and part carried and stacked. The quantity grown this year at tins estate is probably the largest grown in the Colony by any one person. The yield will be upwards of .50,000 bushels wheat, 12,000 bushels oats, and 8,000 bushels barley. Mr Menlove purposes shipping a large quantity of wheat for England, and is now advertising here and in Dunedin for carting to Oamaru of about 1,200 tons. Tt is great pity that the Waiareka branch line was not open as this would form a_ large item of freight, and there will be some difficulty this year in getting the crop to market by other means. Mr Men•'n alreacl y 1,500 acres broken up, which will be put under wheat for next season if the line is gone on with ; otherwise it will have to be sown with rape for sheep. On the same property 2,000 acres will this season be laid down m grass. The grain crop just cut is very fine some of the wheat ranging fifty bushels to the acre, and of splendid quality,—Mr J. G. Finch organist of St. Luke’s, has been presented with a purse of thirty guineas by the congregation.—‘Times.’
