THE COUNTRY.

Tokomaibiro. — A meeting of the stewards of the Tokomairiro Jockey Club was held in the White Horse Hotel on Wednesday evening. It was decided that the grand stand be erected by and kept in the hands of the club. Mr D. Covsan was appointed starter, and Mr George Coombe, judge, at the forthcoming races, for which the programme was prepared. The money offered exceeds by L3O the amount run for at any previous races here. At present the indications are very hopeful for the success of next races.—Mr James MTntosh, driver for Messrs Chaplin and Co. on their southern line of coaches, met with a very agreeable surprise on his arrival in town from Tokomairiro, on Thursday evening last. He was then met by Messrs Ewan, Mudie, Blair, and M‘Kerrow, Who, on behalf of the travelling public of the Province, presented him with a handsome silver tea and coffee service and cake basket as a mark of their appreciation of the careful and circumspect manner in which he has always performed his duties, and the urbanity manifested by him towards those who have travelled with him. Mr MTntosh has now occupied the position of coach driver in this Province for fifteen years, and lias long ago gained for himself the character of one of the most careful and steady men in the employ, and perhaps no one who has had so long experience in the handling of ribbons in the Celony has met with so few accidents, or gained for himself so much general esteem.— ‘ Bruce Herald.’
