THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE ATHENÆUM.
(We are net responsible for the opinion* expressed by our correspondents,]
To the Editor. Sir,— l notice in the ‘ Otago Daily Times ’ of this morning an expression of astonishment that the Superintendent should have sent his letter for publication. This comes well after the following, which I believe to be the facts of the case. The Superintendent s letter was absolutely taken to the * J?« a y Times ’ offics after it had been received by those to whom it was addressed, but before the Committee had been placed iu possession of it. At least, if it were not taken there, something so like this was done that it was through the statements of the Times s people themselves that the matter came out of the letter having been written at all. This caused inquiries upon the subject, and especially by members of Committee, who knew nothing of the matter except by questions asked them about it, an 1 the result was so much anxiety displayed thatthe publication of the letter was forced from the fcuperintendeut. In fact, I may say that the * Daily Times’ is accountable in reality for the publication of what I think all will admit is a word in season.— ! am &c., * , Subscriber. Dunedin, February 11.
