INVERCARGILL RACES.

SECOND DAY. Handicap Huddle Race of 30 sovs, with a sweepstake of L2 2s added. Open to all horses ; distance, two miles and a distance; over 8 flights of hurdles, about 3ft. Oin. high. Mr J. Ward’s ch g Sir Tatton, aged list 41b ~ , (O’Brien) 1 Mr W. Laurie’s g g Don Pedro, aged, Oat . (Lawson) 2 imn Pedro, which was, we believe, carrying some 101b overweight, went off at score, Sir Tatton following in a rather leisurely manner. It soon became evident, however, that he was master of the situation. When half round the course, he collared his opponent, and had it all his own way to the finish. To our mind, the winner had not enough to do for the money—■ the manner in which he took his hurdles suggested a capacity for jumping about double the height cleared none too comfortably by his antagonist. In the next race—the Invercargill Handicap —Tambourini went off with the lead, and kept it about half round the course, when Stackpole drew up and headed him for a brief period. When they changed places it was for good, the horses coming in as follows : Invercargill Handicap of 70 sovs,, with a sweepstake of L 3 added. Distance, two miles. Mr J. Ward’s b g Tambourini, 5 yrs, lOst 2lb (O’Brien) 1 Mr J. Morrison’s r g Stackpole, aged, Bst 101b ... (Holt) 2 Mr A. M’Kay’s br g Kuriwao, 6 yrs, 7st 91b (Fyson) 3 Banjo was pulled up early in the race. The Selling Race brought out five horses, although only four were really in the race, Young Mahratta taking it into his head to bolt. Katie and Swaggerer had the best of the start, but this told little on the result, for shortly afterwards Maniototo made the running and took the lead, closely followed by Swaggerer, which was close pushed by Happy Jack. Immediately afterwards—on the off side of the Bourse—it was impossible to tell “ t’other from which.” Presently Swaggerer emerged, and, closely followed by Happy Jack and Cromwell, passed the post; Katie a bud fourth.
