. Business during the past week has slightly improved, and many large parcels of goods of various sorts have changed hands, A movement has taken place in rice, which is in good demand. Patna may now be quoted at L3l per ton, in five or ten ton lots, smaller quantities commanding higher prices. For sugars there has been a good demand. Good yellows are scarce, and are held for an advance. In spirits no alteration can be quoted. The demand is good, and parcels go off freely. A shipment of Devenish’s ale sold during the’ week at full rates. Tennent’s pale is scarce and cannot be had, excepting at firmer quotations. Candles are unaltered. Kerosene, Is 9d for Devoe’s and Diamond. A. Mercer reports for the week ending 6th February (retail prices only):— Fresh butter, in prints, best quality, Is i'd per lb. Second quality, Is to Is Id per lb. Fresh butter, in lumps, lid per lb. Prime salt butter, lid per lb. Cheese, lOd to Is per lb. Side and rolled bacon, lOd to Is per lb. Colonial hams, Is to Is 2d per lb. English bams, Is 8d per lb. Eggs, Is 4d per doz. The traffic returns of the Southland railways for the month of January show the number of passengers to have been 3,468, as compared with 1.799 in the coresponding month of last year. The goods traffic shows a total for the month of 2,101 tons, against 4,236 tons in January last year. This difference is accounted for by the fact that the freight to the Bebington, amounting to L4GS, does not appear in the returns for January, although the greater part of it was earned in that and the previous month.

Oamaru, February 7. —The first sale of the new season oats was made to-day at 3s 3d per bushel, by Mr Shrimski. The quality was very fine, .and there was great competition.
