RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Saturday, February 7. (Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M.) Vagrancy.— Harry Bolton, 19 years of age, was charged with having no lawful means of support.—Prisoner said that he had not been doing anything for some time past. Last night lie went up to one of the bad houses and stopped there till he was apprehended by Detective Shiny,—Detective Shiny proved the charge. At tivelve o’clock last night he arrested prisoner iu a brothel in Machiti’s lane, between Walker and Stafford streets. One day last week he found him m bed with a prostitute, and warned him.—His Worship: What do you think his occupation there is ? Is he a bully ? —Witness ; Merely a hanger on ; a loafer. Prisoner denied this. He had been working at 1 ort Chalmers with Mr Nettle, grocer, for some years, and was going to Oamaru on Tuesday next. Was led astray by these persons all his lifetime.—His Worship; How do you mean all your lifetime ? You are only a hoy now, —Piisoner ; I mean for the last three years. I only occasionally go up to these houses and then i >peud all my money.—His Worship sa : d the prisoner was apparently young iu years, though old in crime. It was really lamentable to see a boy—for he was no more than a boy—nineteen years of age, so led into crime after having been warned by the police so frequently to take care of himself. It was very painful to sec him following such a course—a course most certainly which would lead to his utter rum. He was inclined to give him a chance, but such a case as this was deserving of punishment, and could not be looked over. —(Prisoner : I promise you if you will let me off this time 1 will never visit one of those houses again, t will go to Oamaru at once}.—His Worship then seiuenced him to ten days’ imprisonment, and cautioned him that if he ever came before him again and did not desist from such & course of life he would give him three months’ imprisonment. That advice was just given in the shape of a caution.
