A private letter, dated 4th December, received by last mail from Fiji, via Auckland, from an officer on board H.M.S. Pearl, now at Levuka, contains the following interesting notes:— We visited the Samoa Islands, stopTO A n mu Wa ?- for * few hours at Savage Island. .The natives there are quite peaceful and civibsed, the ship being surrounded with canoes full of curiosities for barter. The almighty dollar, we found, went down as well as anything in this place as in all others although there were only two whites on’the Island. Wo next visited Tutula, and anchored In Pangp Pango Harbor, 'lt is a most lovely place, entirely landlocked, with hills on each side'2,6ooft. high; From one side of the shore, the Pearl looked like a mihiatute ship, owing tp the ipimdrise height of the background of hills.* ‘ We ’then visited the large town pf Apia, in the_ island of 'Opula.
