CAPTAIN JOHNSON'S CASE.

To the Editor. Sib,—l heartily concur in the sentiments expressed by “W.E.” in your issue of last evening. To me, it appears that the unfortunate captain of the ill-fated Surat is being subjected to a persecution which, when the excitement engendered by the sensational story of the wreck passes away, will be deeply regretted by the entire community. I know there is a wide-spread feeling of sympathy with Captain Johnson in Otago, and that a petition such as suggested by “ W.E.” would be numerously and influentially signed. Trusting that some one will take the matter in hand.—l am, Ac., _ SOUTHLANDJBB. Dunedin, February 2.
