Wellington, January 30. The Provincial Government ha* declined to take over the management of the first section of the Hutt railway when open, though it is willing to assume the management when the through line is completed. A prosecution has been instituted against the New 'Zealand Steam Shipping Company for carrying more than the prescribed number of passengers between Picton and Wellington on her last trip.
a «... January 31. Ihe Steam Shipping Company was fined in the Resident Magistrate’s Court L 5, and Is per head, for carrying too many passengers between Wellington and Picton. The fine was LlO altogether.
Taubanga, January 31. A company is being formed to utilise the sulphur of the celebrated volcanic White island.
Grahamstown, January 30. Gold has been struck in the Caledonian mine, and it is supposed to be the old lead. 1501b specimens luve been taken out, and 4001b of ?icked stuff. The lode is dipping into cokey’s.
i* . .., , , Nelson, January 30. Last night, in the Provincial Council, resolutions for a loan for public works were agreed to unanimously. The Responsible Government resolution was negatived without a discussion. J anuarv 31. The Provincial Council passed a resolution recommending the importation of 150 immigrants per month.
Westport, January 30. At a meeting of the Coal ani Railway Committee, held last evening, they expressed a wish that the Westportians should urge active prosecution in the railway and harbor works. The season for work is expiring, but no action is being tak?n. The new township is jeopardised for want of river protective works. The Government are losing revenue from the railway and lease of reclaimed sections.
Bluff, January 31. The Bebmgton has completed her loading. She carries the largest cargo of any vessel that has ever loaded at the Bluff—namely, 4,646 bales of wool, 3974 cases meats, 83 do tallow, and six tons bones. She sails for London on Wednesday,
