THE ATHENÆUM.
To the Editor. ' •- > Sir, —ln to-night’s Star Dr Roseby, makes a savage onslaught on the Athenaeum, in a letter remarkable only for, the number of misstatements he has contrived to, cram into it. 1 will refer to only one of these, and to your readers wou’d simply say— Ex mo diHce omnex. (Pardon the hackneyed qudta--1 ’ * ooly use it as Dr Roseby seems fond of Latin phrases.) ' ' ■ Dr says -—"The exposition of Christian doctrine in the, A then ream seems to be abandoned to a writer,unknown to the fame of the Ohuroh, and belong ng to one of its.smallest sects—how many of your readers have heard, his name 1— a Mr. B. F. Newton! ..And his works would not bo in the Athenaeum but for tho generosity of oiir late esteemed townsman, Mr Biss. 1 ' . The foregoing statement is simply and entirely without foundation in- fact. If Dr Roseby will take the trouble to censnlt the catalogue or the shelves of the Athemeum library,, he_will there lind works by the folRowing . writers, among , others ; Jeremy Taylor, I h»mas Puller, John Banyan,,Paley, ( Whately, It Chalmers, the late Bishop of Argyll, Ur Oswald Dykes, Dr M‘l.eod Campbell, Pye. ; Smith, Milman, Ac. These were not riven to the institute by Mr. Biss. 1 nave net the time, nor have you the. space to a low of my giving Dr Roseby’a fetter further notice, but you are at liberty to give him my name, and he will then have the opportunity, if he so desire,, of being set right upon other points upon which he has gone astray. I will just add that Ur Koseby has uotsuggested a single book as desirable to be procured, and the committee may therefore be excused if they have not suited his taste, seeing ne gave them no hint as . to the direction it takes.—l am, Ac. One op the Committee. Dunedin, January 29- ....
, To the Editor,. Sir,— l regret that the Rev. Dr Roseby did not publish his letter before Thursday Ihe reason why he delayed doing so is obvious. ■■
Ihe assertions he has made in his letter are almost wholly founded on misconception and untrue information; and perhaps the best way to answer him,is to request those who may consider his assertions founded pn fact to peruse the A thenjgenm, catalogue. If ttie Atheu»mn is to refuse newspapers like the ‘ Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser ’ the ‘ heligfo-Phflosqphical Journal’ & 0 ’ when presented to it, 1 presume all news’ papers theological in tone will also have to be excluded; and were this done ‘ Th. Otago Ghmtiau Record’ would not find a place on that table, which, according to Di , ou^ ht / ha™ posted over it, Rubbish shot here.” ]f the views of D. Koseby are alone to be considered when'neu books are ordered, 1 think it would be bette< to compel ad the members to sign some confession of faith—say the Athanasian Greed tlus do e,. there' would be no mori fepirituahstic” vice-presidents, and th leiigious sense of Dr • oaeby would nevei be shocked. —I am, &c., n ' ' ivKohSM Stouiv ; Dunedin, January So.‘ " J " J ;
