CANTERBURY'S RESOURCES.
The ordinary revenue of Canterbury, including ‘pasturage 'tents, is estimated : at L 188,450, and under this head there is an additional balance of L 26,726. On the land fund there is a balance in hand of L 375 289, while the land sales are expected to yield L230.000.m0r0 within the year. The General Government has to refund to the Province on account of public works L 277.959, On the Joan account there is a harbor wor.% s loan of LKIO.OOO; a credit balance of Li 1,253 ■ and some receipts from sinking funds and refunds to the amount of L 25.200. Thus on all the accounts together the Province has in its coffers L 412,268, and expects to receive up to 30th September next, L 591.601 more • giving it a total revenue for the year of td,004,869. It is estimated that the ordi-' nary expenditure will not exceed 1162,895 so that there will be, from the ordinary revenue alone, a surplus of L 22,280. This too, after the vote for education has been increased from L 10.364 to L 15.000 ; besides which, provision is made for three professors at the College at L6OO each, L 550 for lecturers, and 1,220 for other expenses of that establishment. Altogether, the Council has upwards of L 650,000 unemployed and available for appropriation. Let us see how thev propose to expend it. L 20.000 is set down § r immigration, and LGO,OOO as grants to Road Boards. The huge sum of L 340.975 is set down under the head of Buildings and Worl s s - p Uie principal items of this vote are, L42,500d0r school buildings ; L2O 000 for roads m the Ashburton district; Ll for water supply from Malvern to Rolleston ; and L 158,000 for bridges over the gorges of Waimakariri and Eakaia, the Waipara, the Ashburton,, and rivers in the South. IyICS-000 is set down for railway construction, L 7,000 of which is appropriated for the toE J^ tween Umaru and Tomuka, and L 27.000 from Washdyke to the point; LI 1,000 for Selwyn bridge • 146,000 for rails and of line; and L 46,500 for. locomotives and rolling stock.
