Melbourne, December 24. The principal interest at present centres in the approaching cricket match on Friday. The English cricketers since their arrival have been practising assiduously in the presence of admiring crowds, including the Governor. They have also been entertained in various directions. The Victorians selected are very strong, and the Eighteen feel confident of making a good show against the Colonel Ward and Mr Humphrey are the respective umpires. The interest in the match is very great, and if the weather be fine, 200,000 people will be present during the play. It is intensely hot weather, and much damage has been done by bush fires. Last week the weather changed ;it was quite cold. Rain is badly wanted in the country. At the speech day of the public schools, the Governor made a good speech on education. Mattock, near Woodspoint, was destroyed by fire, and two children burned to death, A harbor trust is strongly advocated by the mercantile and shipping community. The Government have promised to take the necessary steps. A young man named Crosslenson was murdered and burned near Sandhurst. The rate of discount has been raised one per cent. Mr J. F. Markey, barrister and an ex-Soli-oitor- General, died suddenly. The Great Britain has arrived, 57 days out, with 700 passengers. The Rifle Association’s prizes were presented by the Governor, in the Town Hall, on the 19th, and in presenting the New Zealand war medals he paid a very high compliment to the recipients for their services. The will of the late A. Robertson, squatter, was lately proved at L 242,000. The Clunes rioters were charged with committing an assault, and fined L 5 each. The Rev. Dr. Cameron and other Presbyterian ministers are aboard the Claud Hamilton, to attend the Dunedin Synod. The Australian Cup has closed with 28 entries, and the Newmarket Handicap with 36. The Minister of Lands recently forfeited the licenses of a number of squatters’ runs on the. ground of dummyism; also several thousand acres of selected land. Valuable consignments of racing stock have been received in Melbourne and Sydney. A number of drownings in the Yarra have occurred. Sydney. Parliament is adjourned to 13th January. The seamen’s strike .has ended in a mutiny. The shipowners yesterday pledged themselves not to yield to the seamen’s demands. A public testimonial is to be given to Sir A, Stephen. The Hon. G. W. Allen, Minister of Justice, has been re-elected by a large majority. Mail advices state that four large steamers are building for the Californian services ; their speed to be twelve knots, and they are to convey 100 saloon passengers. The Macgregor sailed on the 20th, with fifty-eight passengers and a large mail. The Bishop of Sydney (Dr. Barker) has been thrown from his horse and much shaken. The Queensland Government have sold L 107,000 worth of debentures at LBB. Jarvis was hanged yesterday for the murder of Mr Moggeridge. He confessed the justice his sentence. The cabmen threaten to strike unless the fares are raised, Rochfort and four hundred other exiles have arrived at New Caledonia. Adelaide. Parliament is prorogued to March 27. Bush fires created great destruction amongst sheep and crops. Mr Godfrey, editor of the ‘ Wallaroo Times,’ has received an appointment for a New Zealand paper. Gosse, the explorer, has discovered fine country towards Western Australia.
