Monday, December 29. (Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness —Bartholomew O’Donnell, for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse, was lined l()s. assault. —Alex. Cairns, Government Inspector of Works, was charged by John vVaiker, messenger to the Superintendent, with having assaulted him on the 22.-id inst Mr Barton, who appeared for the complainant, said he was instructed t ■ withdraw the charge, In consequence of his client having received this Letter, which he would lead : Memo, for Messenger John Walker—The Government has had under its consideration from time to time complaints of the manner in which you have performed your duties as messenger," and, not desiring to deal hardly witji you after your lengthened service, will allow you to retire with six months’ pay as cpm pennation for the loss of your office, on condition that you withdraw the charges you have preferred in the Resident [Magistrate's Court agaiust Mr Cairns. (Signed) Alex. Willis. His Worship would s> e that to proceed with the charge would involve complainant’s losing six mouths’ pay. ll abstained from stating what he thought about the conduct of the Government in preventing the matter being proceeded with ; nor did ho wish his VVor ship to expr-sa any opinion as to what he thought of it.—His Worship though- the letter spoke for itself.—Mr Barton said that, were they to go on with the case, the complainant, who was a very old man, would lose his six m-uitbs’ pay, and the matter would therefore have to drop. The Lourt then adjourned.
