THE AUCKLAND RACES. Ellerslie, December 27. At the races to-day there was a much smaller attendance, and little spirit in the betting. Great disappointment was expressed when it ■was known that Papapa was struck out the New Zealand Cup at 1.30 p.m. The first event > of the second day’s racing was The Innkeepers’ Pukse, a Handicap Sweepstake of 5 sovs, with 100 boys added. Distance, 11} mile. Mr Ray’s Hatred, 6 yrs, Sst 121b - - 1 Mr Walter’s Slander, aged, Sst ■ • -3 Only two horses started. Hatred took the lead and kept it. Slander challenged her in the straight, but was shaken off, Hatred winning by a length. The Flying Stakes, a sweepstake of 3 sots each, with 30 sovs added. Distance, A mile. Mr Ray’s Hatred, 6 yrs, 7st 121b - - W.O, The crowd hooted and hissed, and seemed inclined to make a disturbance. The New Zealand Cup Handicap, a Sweepstakes of 10 sovs each, with 200 sovs added. The second horse to receive 25 sovs from the stakes. Distance, 1 mile. Mr Walter’s Yatterina, aged, 7st 111b - - 1 Mr Ray’s Calumny, 4 yrs, 9st - - - 2 Mr Walmsley’s Atalanta, 5 yrs, fist 61b - 3 This was a splendid race between the first two horses. Yatterina got off with a start, and made the running at a hot pace, Atlanta lying last. At the last turn Calumny joined issue with Yatterina, and a splendid race ensued, Yatterina won by a head. Betting : Even on Calumny and Yatterina. The Consolation Handicap, a sweepstake of T 3 sovs, livith 4P apvs {pidpd. Distance, 1 inile. Mr Watt’s Parawhenua, 4 yrs • * - 1 Mr Standings Black Eagle, aged - - 2 The Hack Race was wen by Wizard.

GRAND STAND HANDICAP. Mr Hazlett’s Atlas 1 Mr Atk'Vs Taffrail 2 ( 'apt. Hutchison’s Malabar • - v - Tamburini was a very bad fourth, lime 2min. 58seo. the miners’ purse. Hobby Burns 1 Charlie 2 Seven horses started for this race. THE KEYING HANDICAP. Mr Hazlctt’s Brunette Mr Rivers’s Wild Manx Boy - - - 2 Only two ran. Time --2 min. Oscc. There were no entries for the Selling Race, an * only three acceptances for the Jockey Club Handicap, which were —Tamburini, 9st 121b; Brunette, 7st lib; Taffrail, 7st 111b. December 28. The second day’s racing came off yesterday, the weather having improved. THE CROMWELL DERBY. The Maid J Lady Pembroke - - - • * * * Time—3min. Usee. Bismarck was pulled up at the mile-post, having no chance in the race. THE JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. Brunette 1 Taffrail 2 Tamburini 3 Tamburini and Taffrail nearly ran a dead heat for second place, and were both upon Brunette’s flank. Time—4min. Isec.
