THE VOLUNTEERS.

THK COLONIAL PRIZE-VIKING. The No. 1 Company City Guards fired for choice of company’s representatives, at the baits, Anderson’s Bay, yesterday morning; nineteen men competing. The firing lasted from a.m. till noon. The weather was favorable up till 10 o'clock, when a north-west wind sprung up, which made it diliicult to see the bull’s-eye. Incut. M'Kcn/.ic, of Waikari, was in the butts; and Sergt. Lacey, of the same corps, took- the scores. The C minis have for a long time been looked forward to as the premier shots in the < blony, and their scoring, which on the average is considerably above that of any company, fully entitles .them to that position. Lieut. Douglas, who proceeded to Wellington with the Volunteers last year as one of the Province's representatives, heads the list on the present occasion with 93, the highest score yet made ; Capt. Wall’s coming next with 92, followed by Licet. McGregor with a similar score. Tressider, who is also one of the company’s “crack shots,” fired capitally till arriving at the GOO yards range, when he regularly “burst up,” though it is still probable that he will not be out of the final contest, his total being 7G. Subjoined are the scores of the eight highest men

The Bruce Rifles competed at their butts on Wednesday morning for places for the representative firing, which will decide who are to represent Otago in the next Colonial matches. •Sergt.-Major Stevens acted as marker at the butts, and the firing was conducted under command of Major Jones. The weather was very favorable at the first range, but gradually the wind rose fitfully and squally, until, at (500 yds, it was blowing at times a perfect gale, which, as will he seen by the scores, fairly puzzled the shootists. The following were the scores made; —
