Great Fire at Berlin.—A fire, which broke _ out on October 27, causing the almost total destruction of the steam saw-mills at Weidendamm Bridge, ranks with the most terrible conflagrations which have occurred in Berlin for many years. Only the outer walls of the buildings were left standing. The loss of property, most of which was insured, has been estimated at not less than 95,000 thalers. The military conventions between Prussia and the Thuringian duchies and principalities, by virtue of which Prussia holds military supremacy in those States, expired on October 1, Negotiations have been opened by Prussia for renewal of those treaties, but several pf .the duchies have raised objp£t'^ ns i based mainly upon the refusal pf the German War Office to suffer officers 'stationed in those countries to be subjected to local taxes, as the law of the land provides they shall.
