The amount of revenue received at the Cu« ■ c;n-house on goods cleared for consumption this day, was L 1,398 5s Bd. The amount of gold duty received at the Custom Honse, Dunedin, to-day, was L 1,199 13s 3d, duty levied on gold shipped by the s.s. Albion. The sale of sugar ex Emperor, to-day, by M'Landresa, Hepburn, and Co. was marked by unusual dulncss ; the trade evidently not being disposed to go into stock. Only two small parcels found buyers—fine yellows at L 35 ss, and fine whites L3B 10s, We have had complaints of the delay in delivering the goods by the Christian M’Auslaud, and of losses of opportunity of effecting sales in consequence. This inconvenience to merchants ought not now to be allowed; for with the improved appliances at command as compared with eighteen mouths back, the whole cargo might have been landed weeks ago, and much of it might have gone into consumption. Such delays are a loss every way : to the shipowner, the shippers, the consignees, and consequently the Province. One great advantage of improved appliances is economy of capital; but if ships arriving in Dunedin are delayed weeks when days would do for their discharge, there is not only an unnecessary locking up of capital, hut the dawdling tends to bring the Port itself into disrepute.
