We thank her purser, Mr J. Norris, for report. We learn that the brigantine Hercules, winch arrived in the roads yesterday morning, mistook Kakanui for Oamaru Roads, and in wearing round to get out again touched the reef. She sustained no serious damage. This is the second time recently that Kakanui has been mistaken for Oamaru, the barque Glencoe having been delayed for hours through a similar mistake as to locality. Kakanui now looms very large from the sea, and the resemblance of the two places furnishes an additional argument for the erection of a lighthouse on Oamaru Cape, as the tower would afford a distinguishing beacon by day, in addition to the advantage of the light by night.— * North Otago Times.’ Messrs Brogdeu and Son’s p.s.
