THE REV. F. C. SIMMONS AND THE COLONIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

The following is the “ Colonist’s ” report of Mr Simmons’s observations on the above subject, made at the Nelson (k)liege {adze distribution yesterday No money was ever we judiciously laid out than the L 3,000 voted, if the object was to check and stunt l\v;.hor education. The governing body of fcke University was not composed of of experience in education or academical eminence, but almost entirely of politicians or Ministers. The result of this was shown in the programme issued for the next competition. Me instanced physical science, which had six distinct branches; and to win ft scholarship the wretched student must bo studying four subjects at once, which, he contended was enough to muddle the brainsof any boy of sixteen years of age. The text books were admirable ones, with the exception l of King John and Dean Trench, which are not quite the books foi< boys of that age. Even were this examination for mature students of the University, the training to get up these subject* thoroughly would be the work of many months. He complained that he could not get the text hooks more than a few weeks before the examination, and asked why the University authorities communicated with local_ booksellers rather than with the affiliated institutions.
