THE COLONIAL PRIZK-FIrI^O. The Dunedin Naval Brigade competed at the Anderson's- Bay butts this morning for the choice of company's representatives for the next Intercolonial prize meeting. The weather was good. -.Thirteen : men assembled at the range ; but Lieutenant Muir, who was appointed to superintend the firing, failed to put in an. appearance. The men, however, elected to shoot, leaving the matter to Sub-Lieutenant A. Grant and Sergeant Wallace, both of whom were on the ground. The ranges and conditions were similar to those of the previous competition days. At the 20U vends, Grant and W. Begg were top-scores, will) a tie of 21!; at the -100 yards, J. Begg headed the list with a like score; at the 500 yards, <lrani with 23; and at the 000 yards, Stuart with 21. Grant shot steadily throughout, heading the list with a total of 88. the highest at present of the town companies. .Subjoined are the scores in extenso
Miller ... 0000000 retired No “strange” officer having been present, as is required by the regulations, the men will have to fire again. We have been requested to contradict a statement in this morning's “ Daily Times,” viz., that “ the Artillery match will have to be fired over again, as a condition of the regulations was inadvertently not complied with.” It is necessary that a “ strange” officer should superintend each company’s firing, and some believed that none was present, hut the attendance of Major Atkinson on the range remedies the defect. The Portohello Rifles fired off for representatives on Monday; Lieutenant Wilson, P.N.C., in the butt, and Captain Goldie in charge. The wind was from the right when the firing commenced, and changed to the left at the 400 yards, blowing haul enough before the firing was completed to render it necessary to aim a good bit off the target. Otherwise the day was
