Wellington, December 6. Over 1,000 shares in the new Sugar Refining Company have been taken up to-day. Messrs John Martin and Lipmau Levy have been appointed Wellington directors of the Standard Insurance Company. The shares are beeiug freely taken up. Mr Robert Lee, head master of the Bishop’s School, Nelson, is appointed Inspector of Schools. • _____ Auckland, December 6. R. S. Andrews, a farmer, has been arrested on a warrant in a criminal action for libel, brought by John Wallace, arising out of the Pakuranga Provincial election. He was released on bail. The Sir George Grey Cadets beat the Napier Cadets in the riHe contest. The corps have been victorious over all the cadets in the North Island, and have now challenged the Otago, Nelson, and Christchurch cadet;. A barn at Waimate containing furniture, guns, oats, Ac., belonging to Wi Katene, has been totally destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at LIOO. A deputation of merchants waited upon Mr O’Rorke, and urged that Auckland had been unfairly treated regarding the East Coast service. The deputation stated that through the steamers running to Wellington and not calling at Auckland, it carried the Poverty Bay trade south. They further said the object of the Legislature in granting a subsidy was to connect Auckland with the East Coast Ports. Mr O’Korke said he would communicate with Mr Vogel. __ Tauranga, December (>. The Luna is expected hourly with the Native Minister and the Superintendent. They visit Taurangajon immigration matters. A good Native trade is springing up ; business is good, and there are many land speculators in the district. December 8. The Native Minister was well received by every section of the Natives. He is now addressing a monster meeting of the Maories. Napier, December 6. Ellen Page, a Maori girl, ajjed fifteen, has been committed for trial for forging a cheque. Clyde, December 7. Hawthorne’s Clyde Hotel was totall} r destroyed by fire at five o’clock this morning. The origin of the fire is at present a mystery. An inquest will be held, on Monday. The property was insured in the Norwich Union Insurance Co. for LGOO. Christchurch, December 8. The Governor has returned from Westland. Swcete, one of the Auckland cricketing team, has come to reside in Christchurch. Robinson and Clayfortb are also expected to do so.
