The barque Columbus took on board her first wool yesterday. . , The twin-screw steamer Pretty Jano arrived early this morning from the Molyneux, and passed up to Dunedin. . . The p.s. Samson left the railway pier immediately after the arrival of the 7.30 train from Dunedin, with a good complement of passengers for Oamaru. ~ , , , ... , The N.E, gale which has been blowing for the last two days lulled down last evening, ami was followed this morning by a fine breeze from the S.W.. which ought to bring to the Heads either the Jessie Headman, 92 days from Mascow, the Zealandia, or the Caller On, DO (lays from London. The railway pier has a more lively appearance to-day. The < hnstian M‘Ausland commenced to which makes four vessels discharging at the pier—the May Queen and Christian M‘Auslaud, from London ; the Lenore and Jane Rowland, from the Mauritius. The barque Lady Agues from New York, has finished discharging her Dunedin portion, and sails to-morrow for Auckland. Another attempt was made this morning by the contractors, Messrs Bucklund and Co., to remove the hulk Talbot Castle, which has been lying on the beach for the last two years, and is now in the way of building the new pier. At low tide yesterday a number of men were employed digging round her for the purpose of making her more buoyant, and placing logsundei her keel for her to slide off ; and at high water this morning, bv the aid of screw-jacks and a rope from the hulk to the jetty and then to the Cincinatti, they succeeded in shifting her from her old bed where she has so long lain, and expect to remove her altogether next tide, when she will be moored alongside the Industry off the head of the Graving Dock. Messrs Sutherland and Co. are making good progress m the schooner now building. They will have the ■whole of the framing up by the end of the week.
