DUNEDIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the committee was held at the Secretary’s office last evening. Present —Messrs Livingston (in the chair), Sherwin, Robin, Wright, Stout, Hay, and Gordon. A letter of apology was received from Mr Street, who was unavoidably absent. It was proposed by Mr Stout, and seconded by Mr Sherwin, “That the committee meet at the Athenreum, at half-past two o’clock on Saturday next, for the purpose of inspecting the sites offered by the City Council for the proposed Fourth School, and that the Reserves Committee, and the members of the Bell Ward, together with the Secretary of Works and Mr Hislop, the Inspector of Schools, be invited to attend.” The following motion, of which notice had been given by Mr Robin, was deferred pending the above visit“ That taking into consideration the crowded state of the Middle and North Dunedin Schools, and the consequent injurious effects to the health of the pupils, the headmasters be instructed not to admit any more children, excepting to fill up such vacancies as may from time to time occur, consequent on any of the present pupils leaving the school.” It was proposed by Mr Stout, and seconded by Mr Robin —“ That, in the opinion of the Committee, it is expedient that the Education Board should regulate the space to be allowed pupils in the various schools,” Mr Sherwin proposed, and Mr Wright seemded the following resolution ; • “That, in future, the meetings of the Committee be open to the Press.” Proposed by Mr Stout, and seconded by Mr Hav—“That the Works Committee be instructed to invite tenders for the proposed alterations in the District Schools.” The annual examinations of the pupils were fixed for the following dates South District School--Thursday and Friday, 4th and sth December. Middle District School —Monday and Tuesday, Bth and 9fch December. North District School-Thursday and ifriday, 11th and 12th December. The following notice of motion was given by Mr Stout : —“ 1 hat, in the opinion of the Committee, the reading of the Bible in schools should be at the option of the School Committee.” The Committee then adjourned till Saturday next.
