CITY COUNCIL.
The Council met at four o’clock this afternoon, the Mayor presiding. After disposing of the correspondence the following reports were read : PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The Public Works Committee reported inter alia :— That the following tenders, opened at last Council meeting, have been acceptedMr Ashworth Crawshaw’s (LCw), for forming and metalling portions of Arthur and Russell streets, High Ward ; Mr James Hardie’s (L2O), for lengthening a stone culvert adjacent to Stuart street.—As to memorial from ratepayers in Leith Ward, asking to have a third bridge erected across the Water of Leith to the new Botanical Cardens, your Committee, feeling that the want of a bridge is much felt in the locality referred to, have asked the Government to join the Council in erecting a rustic bridge for foot passengers, and have offered to place at the disposal of the Government a quantity of wire suitable for the work. Ec letter from the Congregational < 'hurch. instructions b;n e been given to have View street cut close into the line of the church property, in order to have the* adjoining footpath formed to the full width. Instructions have been given to have Princes street regularly swept once a week. Your Committee recommend as follows: - Removing manure depot. That a new site be selected for the depot, numerous complaints having been made regarding the present site. The lessee has in the meantime been enjoined to strictly comply with his specification. As to letter, 13th inst., from the Waterworks Company relaying water-pipes-that in future the Water Company bo refill)red to apply for and obtain the consent of the Council to lay water-pipes, otherwise they will be liable for breaking up the streets without giving the notice specified in their Act. Ec Queen street work: that the motion for improvements at Queen street, from Forth place to Duke street, be allowed to lie over. As to Cr. Reeve’s motion, submitted at last meeting of Council, re stands for wood carts, that one place in each of the four wards be appointed as a stand for wood carts, viz., In Leith Ward at the top of Albany street, between Great King and George streets; in youth Ward-at Princes street south, opposite Kohiwo# CVt; ig ajjtf ,
Bell Wards—roadway In Octagon. That instructions be given or the completion of the kerbing channel and asphalting around the new promises of Messrs Geo. Gray Russell, and Co., in Bond, Water, and Crawford streets. — A letter lias been forwarded to Mr M‘Kenzie, Government contractor, for works at Queen street, warning him to desist from filling in sections at the rear of the distillery premises in Castle street, without making proper provision for carrying a drain through the land referred to; otherwise he will be responsible to the owners ; of adjacent property for any damage which may ensue from the stoppage of water. —As to memorial under date Oct. 29, from residents in Maitland street, regarding alterations in building lines, your Committee has replied to the memorialists to the effect that the Council has not in any way interfered, nor intends to do so with the rights of owners of property or their present holdings. Your Committee recommends that the subject be allowed to right itself. —As to letters fromC. M‘K. Gordon, applying for a sum of L(>; and from Mr C. Begg, applying for LlO, for their consent to allow the Council to slope Smith street embankment on to their property, your Committee recommends that a sum of L 5 be offered to each, by way of compensation for cost of reinstating their garden*.—As to deferred clause of report re motion for watering streets, your Committee considering that the watering of the streets is at present commenced at six o’clock a.m., still thinks it impossible to have the ward completed by eight o’clock a.in.—As to letter from Mr Jas. Beadle, 31st October, re drainage of section 29, block 21, Mr Beadle lias been informed that he must fill up his section to the street level, in order to get rid of the drainage complained of. —Your Committee recommends that the newly made roads in the South Dunedin Recreation Ground be properly metalled with gravel and metal. FISANCB COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee submitted their report as under ; As to letter from Provincial Government, dated 29th October, submitting s claim made by Sergeant Nimon for sergeant’s pay, your Committee recommends that a reply be forwarded to the Government to the effect that the Council cannot vary Mr Nimon’a salary, which is a matter of arrangement betweea the Council and Mr Nimon alone, so long as he is in the employ of the Corporation.—As to letter from Provincial Government, sth instant, requesting that the half cost of the salary of Mr Lumb, Revenue Officer, be paid into the Treasury' by the Corporation is, per previous arrangement, as from Augiht 1,1373, the date of Mr Lumb’s appointment. —He cost of kerbing at churches, your Committee recommends an allowance to each church up to L2 j, on condition that any balances be paid within one month from present date. —As to proposal to credit Bell and Leith Ward allocation accounts, a fixed amount in respect of cost of kerbing, channelling, and asphalting already laid down around the City Reserves within those wards, your Committee recommends that this matter lie over for a general adjustment; but as regards cost of such work, yet to be executed, your Committee recommends that it be charged against ordinary revenue, not against special wards.—As to keeping horse at D.V. F.B. Station, your Committee recommends that the matter liepveruntil a permanent D.V.F.B. site be fixed upon. [The rest of our report will appear tomorrow.]
