INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

When we wait to press yesterday, the fifth wicket (Yates) had fallen for 21 runs, and Robinson (the Auckland captain) had joined Clayforth, who immediately broke a succession of singles by driving Downes well down to the off for’ 2. He followed this up with another couple off Glen, the ball being badly fielded by Clark. In the next over he had a squeak. A ball from Downes touched the bails, but did not remove them. Robinson scored a tine hit for 3 off Glen’s next over. In Downes’s next Robinson gave a chance to Meares, but the Otago captain was merciful, A couple of singles, and then Clayforth lifted Glen straight down to the fence for 3. For a time it seemed as if the two men were in for a stand, as both were well set; but Downes dispelled that illusion, sending the Auckland captain to the right-about with a regular trimmer. 6 for 49. Sweet joined Clayforth, and soon distinguished himself by lifting one from Downes pu to the roof of the pavilion, for which he scored 2 only, and elicited a round of applause by Sending Glen straight away for G—the hit of the day. This he fol'owed up by driving Downes across the fence for 3. Garwood then relieved Glen, and it was high time; indeed a change should have been made an hour earlier. In his last ball he clean bowled Sweet. 7 for 57. Dixon was the incomer. Clayforth scored another single, and Garwood bowled another wide, for which two runs were got, and then he effected a lodgment in nixous’a timbers, having bowled a man in the last ball of each over. 8 for 61, and a prospect of a close game. Buckland joined Clayforth, who scored a couple off Downes by a cut and an off drive ; Buckland drew Garwood for a single, and hit Downes for two, though a single would have been had with difficulty if Macfarliju bed fiehLd it. Garwood bowled a maiden, Buckland nicked a eounle of singles, and Garwood displaced Olayforth’s middle stump. 9 for 70, Clayforth’s 19 being the result of really good play. Lankham was the last man. Buckland scored a single off Downes, and two off Garwood, when the latter bowled a wide, which brought tbe scores pretty close, and naturally caused considerable excitement. Two singles were got, and Garwood bowled another wide, which made the scores equal and the next ball Buckland placed to leg for 1, making Auckland 78. In the next over Garwood made the catch of the day, securing Buckland in the slips in fine style, catching with one hand a very high ball. The innings thus terminated for 78 runs. For Otago, Downes bowled splendidly, as did Garwood, while tbe fielding was really good, Khodes longstopping, Allen at point, and Clark being particularly noticeable. At 5.25 Auckland again took the field, Meares and Thomson facing the howling of Sweet and Buckland, Thomson took Sweet’s first over and cut his third ball for one, and also got a single off Buckland. Thomson played a maiden by Sweet, and in Bucklaud’s next over Meares retired, having played the last ball on to his wicket, 1 for 2. Rhodes joined Thomson, who cut Sweet for a brace, and scored a single off the same bowler next over, and theu all but run out Rhodes, who, however, immediately afterwards succumbed to one of Sweet’s “ particulars.” 2 for 5. Lambert was associated with Thomson long enough to see him make a draw for 2 ami a hit in the slips for 3, when the latter was caught by Buckland at short-leg. 3 for 10 ; that number having been contributed by Thomson by real good play. Allan supplied the vacancy, and almost immediately afterwards Lambert placed bis log right in the way of one of Sweet’s (at least so thought the umpire), and he had to retire. 4 for 10. Macdonnell joined Allen, who gob three by hitting Buckland well to Jeg, and obtained

a single off Sweet by putting past cover point. But in Buokland’e next over he was clean bowled. 5 for 14, and Otago’s hopes looking decidedly blue. Macfarlan joined Macdonnell, who scored some singles pretty quickly, and then ran an extremely dangerous one, for which Macfarlan suffered. 6 for 17. Garwood joined Macdonnell, who drove liweet welt to the off for four ; which Garwood followed up by putting Buckland to leg for a couple. Macdonnell scored another three for a drive off Sweet, for which the latter avenged himself by at once dismissing Garwood. 7 tor 26. Clark then joined Macfarlan, and in less than twenty minutes the two men run up the score to 33, at which figure it stood when the stumps were drawn at 6.30 p.m. Otago.—Ftust Innings. SECOND DA\ r .

The second innings of Otago was continued this morning, Macdonnell and Clark, the wo not-outa of yesterday, going to tne wickets at about 10.45, the score standing at 53 runs for 7 wickets. Buckland started the bowling for Auckland, Macdonnell play ing the over, which was a maiden. The second ball from Sweet, Clark put close up to third man, but the chance was not taken, Clark scoring a single. The first ball from Buckland, Macdonnell just nicked, and Clark, too eager to score, ran for it. He was right down on Macdonnell before the latter started, and his wicket should have been the price of his folly, but the ball was wretchedly fielded, Macdonnell then put Buckland away for a couple, hut Clark icgularly “ spooned” up the next ball from Sweet, which the bowhv took. Eight for 37. Macdonnell drove Sweet well to the on for two. Downes, who had joined him, was only able to play a couple of balls, when he was given out leg before wicket. Nine for 37. Glen, the last man, then went in. Macdonnell scored a single off the last ball of Sweet’s next over, ami onother off Buckland, but G’en only had two halls, one of which found its way among his stumps. The innings terminated for 41 runs (of which Macdonnell got 14 not out), leaving Auckland 40 to get to win. At 11.45 Otago took the field, the men being placed in the same positions as yesterday, the difference being that Garwood took up the bowling in place of Glen, and de livered the first over. Clayforth and Lankham appeared at the wickets, the former facing the bowling. Clayforth took the first three balls from Garwood, putting the third to leg for a single. His next he delivered, fairly ia the centre of Lankbam’s stumps. I for 1, Glen bowled at the other end. His second Clayforth hit to the off for a single, the ball being smartly returned by Macfarlan, The next Dufaur let pass him, and Rhodesi muddled it. but the opportunity was not taken advantage of. In Garwood’s Clayforth struck hard to point, but it was splendidly fielded by Allen. Dufaur drew Glen to leg for a single, and the next Clayforth hit up in the slips, where Downes took, it in fine style. 2 for 3. Robinson joined Dufaur, Dufaur hit the first ball from Garwood sharp to point, and attempted to run. for it, and saved his wicket by the merest chance. The second ball in Glen’s next over Robinson put up in the slips, just beyoucS Garwood’s reach, and Dufaur nicked the next to the on for a single, following it up by putting Garwood nicely to leg for another single. Then came a maiden from Glen, and Garwood in the third ball of his next over dismissed Robinson with a regular trimmer. 3 for G. Alpe joined Dufanr, and registered, a single by putting to leg the first ball he gotfrom Garwood. Dufaur also scored a single, and put one from Glen well up to cover, but barely enough to suit Clatk. He next cut Garwood, but the ball being badly fielded 1 y Lambert, obtained 2 for it. Off Garwood he got a like number for another out. Garwood changed sides with Glen, and then bowled awide. His third ball Alpe lifted well to leg. for 4. Dufaur put Glee away to leg for a. single, the ball being well fielded by Clark. Garwood bowled a maiden, and off Glen’s; first Alpe got 2. Dufaur in the next over hit one right into Allen’s hands. 4 for 21, Dufaur getting his 10 by very careful play. Bellars joined Alpe, but the companionshipwas very brief. Alpe bit I from Glen hard .and. very low to square leg, which Thomson caught l in a manner that fully earned the round of applause with which it was greeted. 5 for' 21. Yates was the next man. Garwood, added another wide to the score, and Bellars put his next ball to the off for a single, and. scored 2 for a good leg hit off Glen, following; it up with another single, and a couple for agood put-away to leg off Garwood, who went, on at his old end next over. Yates got a. single off’ his first ball. Garwood then gave a wide, and Bellars drove his third ball tothe off for 3, and Yates planted his next well:; down for another 3. Bellars scored another., making 9 off the over. Meares took up the I bowling at the opposite end, and put om I slows. The first ball Bellars hit well down | to leg for 3, and in the next Yates, in his anxiety to score the winning hit, lost liip: j wicket. 6 for 40. Bweet went in and made j the required hit, Auckland winning by a run j and four wickets.

Now the game is over, wc cannot help remarking that the Otago captain committed two errors of judgment yesterday—first;, in not going into the field when he won the toss, and second, in keeping Gl n n on as long as he did m the afternoon. The weakness of our men in hatting was only too p ! ain from the commencement. But they are entitled to all praise for the plucky game they played, and to the highest commendation for thqir fie ding, which, on both days, and particularly thw morning, was as good as has been seen on that ground for some years. We are always pleased to see the bettor men, as our visitors hare proved themselves to be, win, and hope that thi» contest will be but the precursor of many between the two Provinces. When the game was finished the Auckland men drew up in front of the D.U.C. pavilion, and gave three hearty cbe r« for their opponents, the Otago captain, and the umpires, and the Dunediu team returning the compliment.
