THE INTERCOLONIAL RIFLE MATCH.

THIRD DAY. Wednesday, November 12, The proceedings of the third day of the meeting were confined to the Intercolonial Military Rifle Match, This contest was of an unusually interesting character, owing to the fact that representatives of New Zealand were for the first time engaged in a rifle competition on Victorian soil. In this match the three Colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, and Now Zealand were severally represented by 20 marksmen, the conditions being 10 rounds each, at 200, 000, and 000 yards. Hay rifles were used by the two first-mentioned Colonies, and the New Zealanders fire\J with the medium Enfield rifles, with which they are armed. The prize is the challenge cup presented by Mr .Samuel (lardiner, the trophy to be held for one year by the winning team, under conditions stimulated by the donor. The (government of Victoria also gave a cup valued at I <3O, to be competed for by New South Wales ami New Zealand in this match ; and MajorF.T, Sargood offered a silver trophy, valued at I<lo, for the highest scorn- in tlie New South Wales and New Zealand teams. The shooting throughout the day was very indifferent on all sides, though the weather was not unfavorable. The highest score made at 200 yards out of a possible 40, was the 35 of Aldorton, of New Zealand. On the New South Wales side 31 was the highest, and on that of Victoria 33. In the totals at every range New Zealand was beaten by New South Wales. Victoria was beaten by New Zealand at 200 yards, but at the two other ranges the 'Victorians headed New Zealand. At none of tire ranges did the Victorians equal the total scores of New South Wales ; and the opponents who, the previous day, were defeated by 37 points in the small-bore match, vanquished tho Victorians on this occasion by a majority of (k> points. The New South Wales team now hold the Cardiner challenge cup. They have also won the Victorian cup. Major Templeton, who was to have fired in this match for Victoria, did not take part in it because of his multifarious duties as seci etary. At the termination of the match the three teajqs were formed i« bollux wj Major

Raymond, of New South Wales, made a few remarks appropriate to the occasion. Throe hearty cheers wera then given by the New South Walosmen for their opponent* of Victoria and New Zealand. Colonel Rede acknowlcd the compliment made to the Victorians, and observed that though they were sorry to have been beaten by New South Wales, they enjoyed the pleasure of having beaten New Zealand. But m regarded the latter colony, it was well known that this rifle ground was one of the hardest for strangers to compete upon. Ho hoped this intereolonial match, which had been inaugurated so pleasantly, would be earned on for years to come, and that they would all win sometimes. Three cheers weie then given for the victors and the vanquished. Captain Goldie, of the Nsw Zealand team, expressed a hope that the next time his team competed they would be more successful, and briefly acknowledged the fair and handsome treatment which he said they had received. The following tabic shows the aggregate scores

With reference to the Victorian Small-bore Cup, which lapsed in consequence of the New * Zealand team not taking part in the small-bore ! intercolonial competition, it was stated yester--1 day that the council of the V.K.A. had decided 1 to give the value of it, L2O, in money prizes, to the ten best shots in the New Zealand and New South Wales teams in the Intercolonial Military Rifle Match, which came off bn Wednesday. Some objections, however, were since made to this course, and the fate of the cup still remains an open question. It has been decided, however, by the V.K.A. to adhere to their determination as regarded the money prizes, and 1/20 ha* been divided among the ten best marksmen of New South Wales and New 1 Zealand.
