SMALL-BORE SHOOTING.
(From the Thame -s Advertiser, October 23.) Yesterday a friendly contest took place at the Tararu range between Mr J. W. Walker, champion small-bore shot of the Colony, and Mr Hoskin, the champion large-bore shot. The weapons were small-bore rifles, and the tangos 500 and 600 yards, ten shots at each range. At the 500-yard range, every shot fired by Hoskin was a haUVeye, making a score of forty out of the ten shots ; and at the 600-yard range he made eight bull’seyes and two centres, thus making a total seventy-eight out of a possible eighty. Walker, at the 500-yard range, made eight bull’s-eyes and two centres two points less than Hoskin—but at the (500 yards he made nine bull’s-eyes and one centre, beating Hoskin’s score at this range by a single point, but the former is nevertheless the victor, having made a point more than Walker. The shooting of both gentlemen was brilliant. -V second competition took place at the 600yard range, in which each competitor tired twelve shots. Hoskin jmade ten bull’s-eyea and two centres, scoring forty-six out of a possible forty-eight. Walker made nine bull’s-eyes and three centres, or forty-five out of a possible forty-eight. Ho?kin thus made within four out of the whole number possible, and Walker made within six of the whole. Hoskin’s weapon was the match Whitworth small • bore, and Walker’s the lligby. We might also mention as a fact worth noticing that there were two sighting-shota at the 600- \ ard range, in each of which Hoskin made bull’s-eyes, and thus made a succession ol no ft wer than thirteen bull’s-eyes. Walker’s scoring, considering how long he has been out ot practice, was really wonderful. The day was favorable for shooting. There was a strong wind blowing, but it was steady ; although at the 600-yard range, Mr Hicks, who was firing with a medium rifle, had to allow four feet of the target for windage.
