SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
CHRISTCHURCH METROPOLITAN, November 12, Grand Stand Handicap, of 100 sovs. Entrance, 5 sovs. Distance, 1 mile. Mr Nosworthy’s g c Calumny, 4 yrs, Bst 121b 1 Mr Redwood’s br f Batter, 3 yrs, fist lOlbs 2 Mr Newitt’s br hj Phantom, 5 yrs, 7st ... 3 There were 12 horses entered on the card, and some disappointment was felt when only three numbers went up on the telegraph. It was considered by a great many a certain thing for the Ham stable, Calumny being thought to be fiir too good for her company. The Nelson division, however, thought differently, and were sweet on Batter; but Calumny started allot favorite with the general public, and justified this by winning a fast race easily. After a little time spent in putting them in order, owing to Phantom being rather too lively, the flag dropped to a fine start, as far as Calumny and Batter were concerned, Phantom evidently preferring to remain where he was, as the other two had gone at least a dozen lengths before he made a move. Calumny cut out the running at a hot pace, closely pressed by Batter. Indeed, for some distance they were close together, Phantom doing his best to retrieve the misfortune of the start. He, however, failed to get on terms with his horses, as the loss had been too great, but what ho did showed that had he got a show at the start, the race would have been a splendid one. At the top of the course, turning into the straight, Calumny still led, with Batter close up, and punishing. Calumny, however, could not be overhauled, and won the race easily by three lengths; Batter second; Phantom third. The Lottery Plate. Mr Nosworthy’s br f Lurline, 4 yrs 1 Mr S. Hayne’s No Gentleman, 4 yrs ... 2 Mr Nosworthy’s b m Hatred, (3 yrs... ... 3 There were six entries for this race, but Earl of Lynne and Paringa wore scratched.
