TOKOMAIRIRO AND LAWRENCE RAILWAY.
The Works are being pushed forward with commendable energy, and should the present rate of progress be maintained, there Is every reason to believe that the line will be ready for traffic contemporaneously with that of Tokomairiro to Dunedin. The contractors (Messrs Campbell) for the first six miles (the Tokomairiro section) are pushing forward the earth works, those on the portion between Mr Murray’s, Glenore, and the Woolshed, being already far advanced. At the Gleuore section, Messrs Strachau and Hunter, the contractors, are at present engaged upon the cuttings leading into the tunnel from the hea I of the gully to Manuka flat. This tunnel will be 440 yards long. At Manuka Flat, Messrs Morrison and Irvine’s contract of 3£ miles (Mackenzie Bros, sab-contractors) commences, and this seems the most difficult section of the line. Just beyond Gardiner’s hotel, a short diversion has been made off the main road, by which its gradient has been very much improved. At the saddle of the round hill, another tunnel of 22(1 yards in length has to be made. The contractors for this section have about 100 men at work. They only commenced two mouths ago, and there is every probability of their being pretty well through with their contract before another winter sets in. Mr Hunter is the contractor for the remainder of the line, known as the Waitahaua and Tuapcka sections (11 miles) and the work is being proceeded with in an energetic and satisfactory manner. The culverts all along the line are being substantially built of scone. Altogether, it appears that no unnecessary delay is to be allowed to take place in the formation of this railway, and the work, so far as it has gone, has a substantial and workmanlike appearance.- Bruce Herald.
