STEWART'S ISLAND IRON SAND.
Mr Alex. Cross, of Invercargill, having sent Home by tbe Ironside a quantity of Inc iron sand which is to be obtained on the beach at Stewart’s Island, received by the last mail the following report thereon, n liich he has forwarded to us for publication, . .. Extract from Mr George Cranston s letter to Mr /'lex. rots, dated Edinburgh, 4th September, 1873—With reference to the Stewart’s Island iron sand, received from you per Ironside, I have estimated the three principal ingredients, and got as the result of my analysis— Titanic acid - * 18';> per cent. Peroxide of iron - - bO'o do do Sami - - - - 10-0 do do Such Jan ore would unquestionably give a most superior quality of iron and steel, though I much fear that at present it is almost valueless to colonists. Such an ore is exceedingly hard to smelt. It requires the high and costly heat of charcoal, which again necessitates the furnace to be built of the most refractory clay known. I think you may therefore cease to keep this article in your mind s eye, in view of something pecuniary being in it.— Southland Thms.
