DETERMINED SUICIDE.
Last week we briefly recorded the fact that a determined suicide had been committed by a man at the Upper Sbotover. The reason given our informant of the cause was “loss of money and the horrors,” but it now appears that some family matters had prayed on the mind of the unfortunate man, leading to his sad end; and that neither drink nor money lost had anything to do with the melancholy affair. So much in justice to the dead man. From particulars which we have since gleaned, the following are details pf thp manpef in >yhjph tbp man, named William Williams, cpme to' his death; and it wjll be seen the deceased had acted in a most determined spirit to accomplish his purpose. Across the Shotovcr Kiyer, near the Reef, there is a “boatswain’s chair ” ejected ; apd jfe seems that Williams had attached a fqpe tq the line op which the “ chair ” works ; }iad then exactly measured and lengthened the roue, so that with Id 3 body attached it should just reach the river below ; had then fastened in his arms in a runujng npose at {he qthqr extremity j and then thrown himself from the “chair 1 ’ into the water, flis body was completely immersed, and only his arms visible above the surface of the river. Strange to say, although in constant intercourse with his mates—some of whom had been school-fel-lows with him—deceased never showed the slightest sign of mental derangement, and of course his suicide was never contemplated. Deceased was 3G years of age, aud a native of Cornwall, England, where his mother, brothers, and others relatives reside. An inquest was held on the 23rd instant by Mr Coroner Beetbam aud a jury (Mr T. F. Roskruge, foreman) when a verdict was returned that deceased drowned himself ip the Shotover River while in a state of temporary insanity.— Wakaiip Mail.
