CRYPTOGRAPHY.

To the Editor. Sir,—For reasons already stated, I will not answer an anonymous writer, and 1 am very much surprised that “ Decipher,” after finding fault with “ A Subscriber” for the above lack of courtesy, should himself commit tho same ung< ntlomanly action ; but, taking the latter part of his note in your yesterday’s issue for a sugge dion, i am willing, if it is true, as stated, that “Government and bank clerks ami counter jumpers in New Zealand aro prohibited from allowing their names being published” (and I certainly should like to know for curiosity’s sake under what law this ban exists), to accept his nom de ntumc on this occasion as a </nid pro <fUO„ That will, I think, ease him from the awkward position, as he insinuates, of being placed under the above category. I must, however, ask “ Decipher” what be means by these remarkable passages which occurred in his letter. First, “If Mr Lynch had inserted the ‘ Frances ’ crypt without so many studio 1 alterations to prevent deciphering. a correct answer would have been sent in.” Secondly, “It is not so difficult as the 1 Mitchell ’ crypt, but seeing there are twenty or thirty studied alterations it was impossible to give a correct rendering.” And, thirdly, “I will consider Mr Lynch an accom plished cryptographist if he can discover this simple sentence. ’ What does it all mean ? Will “ Deciphei” have the goodness to explain ? I am, &c., HpNRV Jun., Bellringers’ Troupe. Dunedin, October 2.%
