CHARGE OF ASSAULT.

A notorious character, named Kate M‘Donald, was brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged witn grieviously assaulting Bichard Briggs. The parties live together in Stafford street, and the man is a carpenter by trade. As Briggs was not expected to live, prisoner was taken to the Hospital, and at three o’olockthis aftern on B iggs’s depositions were taken in the presence of Mr Watt, SubInspector Mallard, and Dr Yates. On the Bth inst., between nine and ten p.m., a row took place in M‘Keay’s Golden Age Hotel, Stafford street. A man named Philips and another man were fighting, prisoner and Briggs being present. The latter, who was sitting down at the time, received a blow on the head, and the prisoner had a spade in her hand. One of those present said “ That’s the spade that’s cut your head open. Briggs,” and another, “That’s your work, M‘Donald.” Prisoner denied this. These were the facts as related by Briggs this afternoon. He further said that he was drunk at the time, but all the others were sober; that be did not believe there would have been any row had it not been for M‘Donald, The prisoner was remanded till this day week.
