THE INTERCOLONIAL RIFLE COMPETITION.
We give below the results of the competition for two new men in addition to Captain Goldie, P.C.N.8., and Sergeant Taylor, No. 2, Scottish, to represent Otago at the intercolonial rifle contest in Melbourne next month. The Council of the Kifle Association selected eight men to shoot for the vacant places, but only five went to the range. The tirgt (iompetiliou took place on the I4th, and was V flf 200, 500, and 600 yards ; the second op the jLGth at ranges of 200, 400, and 600 yards ; »nd tlije third £hjs morning at ranges of 200,500, and 600 yards 5 five shots at each range. The weather on each day was unfavorable for shooting, which accounts for the rather poor scores made. It will be seen that Keid and Lacey tied for second place, but the former, having made the best shooting Qt the last two competitions, gains the hpnpr, and Lacey accompanies the team as waiting man. Captain the ranges, at the same time an(jl a* the other competitors, and his score, which jyo append, justifies the action of the Council. Va the first day the shooting was under the superintendence fif Major Atkinson ; on the second, of Liept. WilSon ; au4 on the third, of Lieut.-Colonel Cargill. Sergeant Macpherson acted as marker.
