MINING INTELLIGENCE.
Tuapeka.— Mining on the banks of the Molyneux during the past winter has been pursued under difficulties. The fickle river has kept continually rising and falling, and in some instances, where men were working deep ground, their winter’s work has been almost profitless. Most of the claims at the Teviot are engaged stripping top stuff—the large quantity of water available at this season enabling them to get the stuff away very quickly. Messrs Woodhouse have just finished a large paddock. This party employ a large number of wages men. At the Horseshoe Bend the system of working with trucks has been for some time in operation. The ground in one of the claims is very deep, but it is worked very systematically, and we believe pays the proprietors well. Two dredges—Nicholson’s and Wood’s —are at work on the river near Moa Flat, with payable results. Two shares in the Hercules Company at the Teviot changed hands last week for the large sum of LSSO. Mr Borton, the late Warden, was the purchaser. Several shares in other companies on the river had also been disposed of recently at high prices.— Times. Waikaia. —A one-eighth share in a claim on the Waikaia was sold last week for L4sl>. The ground is immensly rich in places, and no doubt the next season will see a large number of men profitably employed in that locality. There is no doubt quartz reefs exist about the head of the Waikaia River. Several rich specimens have been unearthed in the alluvial workings. Cromwell.— The Cromwell Company had a cleaning-up of another parcel of 120 tons of stone last week, returning a cake of 293 ozs. retorted gold. The average yield would have h eeu the same as that of the two previous erushi n ? s > but that some fifty tons of the quantity stone mentioned was very poor stuff, got 1U sinking the shaft previous to striking the goldThe company intend having another washing up this week of the same quality of stone. TVy are driving at present and following the run of gold. The stone continues good and reef strong. —The Aurora Company still continue driving their way from the old workings, and are getting into' new ground. Their mill put through a parcel of twenty-two tons of stone, got by Mr W, Anderson from a leader on the boundary of the Aurora lease. It turned out only nine ounces, a result too poor to encourage the idea of continuing working the lead.— Argus. Cahrick.— The shareholders in the White Horse Company’s claim are pushing ahead their drive, which they are putting in on the reef. The reef is not very wide at present (about one foot), but the prospects continue good, the shareholders at any rate fully expecting the stone to go over an ounce to the ton. One of the shareholders in the John Bull Company reports that the/ have a good quantity of stone raised, which they are arranging to get crushed at Mr Logan’s machine. A tunnel is being put in to strike the reef lower down the hill. The indications from this tunnel are that the reef is going down more perpendicularly thon it was before, which, if correct, would be a great guarantee of its permanent nature. — The manager of the Caledonian claim reports that the Royal Standard battery finished ft crushing from that claim on Saturday. The yield was 147 ozs. 6 dwts. of gold from 1(15 tons of stone. The most of this stuff was taken out some six or eight months ago, when opening up and securing the old workings, and as a good deal of mullock unavoidably got in, the average result was in consequence poorer than usual. It was found cheaper to let the mullock go with the rest, than to lose time in picking it.— Ibid.
