for Provincial borrowing to stand over until next session, and that a canvass was made amongst Government supporters to induce them to agree to this course, but that the Government are now determined not to depart from their programme, but will submit to the House a series of Bills authorising certain Provinces to borrow under the terms and general conditions contained in the original Bill thrown out by the Upper House. The tender of Mr John Beaton, of Wellington, for the erection of the I’aranaki Steel and Iron Company’s furnace has been accepted, tbe amount being L 3219. A cablegram has been sent Home for the price of firebricks. • Auckland, September 22. The share list of the National Insurance Company closed here to-day. The number of shares applied for is 82,296. Robert Flood, who was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for stealing during the late fire, proves, on inquiry, to have been wholly innocent. A communication has been sent to Wellington to secure his release from a °*’ September 23. By the capsizing of a boat in the harbor to-day, a fisherman named Fahey was drowned. ... The Paterson to-day takes a large quantity of railway sleepers for Wellington, and telegraph poles for Napier. Grahamstown, September 22. James Sampson and David Sampson, charged with stealing specimens from the Golden Crown mine, were brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, and remanded. Bail was allowed them. Alexandra (Waikato), September 22. It is reported that Purukutu is between Wbarepapa and Kihikihi. The Natives are tired of him. New Plymouth, September 22. The Native meeting at Pariaka was largely attended. Taurua said that should a road and telegraph line be made through Pariaka, none should obstruct it. Te Whiti told the meeting not to listen to Taurua, he being a returned prisoner. Nelson, September 22. Mrs Smith, wife of the captain of the English barque Anna Braginton, fell down dead in the street. Over 7,000 shares in the National Insurance Co. have been applied for here.
