THE D.J.C. AND THE DISQUALIFICATION OF REAY.
To the Editor.
StR, Anyone who knows Captain Hutchison and Mr Joseph Beany will Hot be at all surprised at their feeling indignant at the unmanly attack made upon their characters in wbat is supposed to be the copy of a letter written by a gentleman in Christchurch, addressed to “My dear John,” of Dunedin, and published in the WaikonaUi Herald and Evening Star of last week. I never saw a more deliberate stab in the back, not only at the characters of those two gentlemen, but also at the Club, of which they are members—not that it will do either of those gentlemen any harm : the character of Captain Hutchison as a sportsman, and that of Mr Joseph Beany as a tradesman, are abere suspicion. The public who do not know the surrounding circumstances of the case may think that the committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club acted unwisely in removing the disqualification from Reay ; the particulars of which will occupy more of my time, and more of your valuable space than I can ask you for at present. There is one thing, however, that the public should he made aware of at present, and that is : There is a section of the D.J.C. that met with defeat when Reay’a case was before the committee for consideration, some of whom have since resigned, and are trying to do the Club all possible harm ; but whatever they say or do will have little effect on that portion of the public who know that the “guiding stars” of the D.J.C. are not only a few tradesmen, but thorough sportsmen, who have worked the Club to its present posiThe Club meet to-night for the purpose of selecting office-bearers for the ensiling meetings. and I trust they will think before acting hastily, and elect to the office of hanchcappers, two or more gentlemen who will, roi she time drop the “ shop,” forget all friend-
ship, and any partiality they may have for any particular strain of blood ; then will be found the just weight to be allotted each horse, and satisfaction given to owners of horses and the public generally.^ Pleading a deep interest in the welfare of the 1). J.C., is a sufficient excuse for my trespassing at this length on your space. I am, &c., Seven Stone Four. Dunedin, 22nd Sept,
