Tbe amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared for consumption tins day, was L 1,215 Is Id, The amount of gold duty collected at the Customs to-day was L2B 4s Id, duty at the rate 2s per oz charged on 2820z. The week has been characterised by unusual quietness, consequent udon interruption of communication with the interior, through the unusually heavy rain that fell. Several mails both to and from Dunediu were detained by floods. Under the circumstances demand has been limited,|thirough being confined mainly to Ponedixu Prices in the main remain unaltered,
and have been more influenced by Melbourne advices than by transactions on the spot. Bottled ale is very scarce, and there is much inquiry for it, and shipments of stout are moving off at full prices. Brandy continues firm, with an upward tendency. A parcel of Hennessy s case realised 31s fid by private sale. Whiting is in very short supply, and extreme prices are paid for it. In oilmen’s stores, through desire to do business, there is an inclination to recede from late quotations ; but no actual decline can be quoted. Dried fruits still advance in Melbourne, and in consequence they are firm at present prices. Bottled fruits can scarcely be had at any price either hero or in Melbourne. No change as to supply can be reported in sugar Yellows and browns command extreme rates, although advices have been received, stating that over 1,000 tons are on the way from Mauritius to New Zealand. Tobacco is in statu quo, buyers holding back for the arrival of shipments, of whiah advices have been received. Kerosene may still be quoted at last week’s prices, and candles are obtainable at lid to lljd. The advance of the season renders it probable that speedy communication will be had with the interior, and as stocks up-country must necessarily be light, improved demand will result. . , An adjourned meeting of the consignees or goods shipped by the Dallam Tower was held at Messrs George Gray Russell’s office to-day. Mr Tewsley (of Messrs Sargood, Son, & Ewen), who had just come from Melbourne, stated that he had seen most of the goods, and that they appeared to be in perfectly good order, and that the consignees would have no difficulty in procuring them. The other business transacted was unimportant. . , . Breadstuffs continue dull. In wheat the inquiry is very limited, and beyond the sale of a few parcels of second-class lots there have been no transactions. Qoutations are unaltered. Prime samples of northern. 5s 3d to 5s fid : se-cond-class, 4s 9d to ss. Oats are quiet, at 4s 2d to 4s 5d ; the demand for shipment has fallen off greatly. Barley is not wanted. Flour remains as last quoted, Ll2 10s for sacks and Ll3 for bags. The business doing is confined to small trade parcels. Second-class flour has a fair sale at 810 to Lll. Bran is in bad supply? the market is quite bare. Trade lots are selling at L 4 15s to L 5. Pollard, L 5. Barley dust scarce, at L 5, ~ OA ,, A. Mercer reports for the week ending 2Utn September. Retail prices only Fresh butter, in prints, best quality, Is 4d per lb; second quality, Is 2d to Is 3d per lb. Fresh butter, m lumps, Is Id to Is 2d per lb. First-class salt butter, Is 2d per lb. Salt butter is in little demand, hut may he quoted at lid to Is per lb for good samples. The market is being well stocked, and prices are not likely to improve. Cheese, Is per lb. Side and rolled bacon, 9cl to lOd per lb. Beef hams, 7d to 8d por lb. Boiled beef hams, 9d per lb. Colonial hams, Is to Is 2d per lb. English hams, Is 8d per lb. Eggs are very plentiful, and selling at lOd per dozen. Auckland, Sept. 19.—Mr Binney reports the grain and provision market a little more active. Oamaru flour, Lls ; Canterbury, Ll3; oats, 5s 3d to 5s 4d : wheat, 5s 9d to fis fid; malt, 9s fid to 10s ; barley, none ; potatoes, L 4 10s to L 4 15s; cheese, B£d ; butter, 8d to 9d; hams and bacon, Is 9d : peas and beans, none ; bran, fis sd; pollard, fis lOd; kauri, 9s fid to 16s. —Mr John Reid reports Dunedin flour at Ll3 10s; pearl barley, L 24 ; butter unsaleable.
