The s.s. Storm Bird, for the Bluff, left the railway pier at 2 p.m. . . . The cutter Jane, from Moeraki, arrived at 8.30 to-day, and passed up to Dunedin. The s.s. Maori, for Lyttelton, came down from town at 11.30 last night, and sailed at 7 Annie for Oamaru, Redcliffe for Moeraki, Isabella for Hokitika, and Spec for ■Wanganui, sailed yesterday afternoon. On Saturday last the men employed at the two Landing Services were at work at the s.s. Lady of the Lake, and just before dark, with the assistance of their engines, succeeded in bringing the vessel with her stem to the sea. We (Timaru Gazette) learn that Captain Tali fofta riven notice of abandonment to the underwriters, to which he received a reply to the effect that they would not accept the same. On the same day, an official inquiry into the beaching of the vessel was held before Mr Hart. H.M.0., and Captain Scott, nautical assessor. Captain Tall, in the course of his evidence, said The vessel is a partial loss. I consider her value to have been L 4,000, and the loss to be about L 1,500. I have heard since that the vessel was insured for L 2.500, but I was not aware at the time of the casualty that she was insured. No salvage services were rendered. Everything was done that laid in our power to save the vessel” The following was the finding of the Court “ That the Court considers the steamer Lady of the Lake was run ashore to prevent her foundering; that all precautions mem to have been taken to save the vessel; and that the master acted judiciously in beaching her where he did.”
