Auckland, September 15,
The ship City of Auckland has arrived from London, ninety-nine days out, with twelve saloon and twenty-three steerage passengers, all of whom are well. On August 17, Hewlett, the third officer, while setting a studdingsail boom, fell overboard. Prompt measures were taken to save him, but without success. It is believed that he hurt himself when falling. A son of Mr Williams, Onehunga, has been killed by a fall from bis horse. One Richard White has been drowned by the capsizing of a dingy. Twenty-four families and sixteen single men, who arrived in the Berar, still remain unemployed. The Government stopped their rations on Saturday, leaving them destitute. The Deputy-Superintendent has telegraphed to the General Government, remonstrating against this step. Great complaints are made regarding the accommodation provided for the immigrants. The married people are herded together so that they cannot retire without indecency. The single girls are allowed to wander about the streets without guardianship, and many of them have been seen drinking at bats.
Geahamstown, September IG. Tookey’s mine caught fire at eleven o’clock last night. The mining men were working below, but all escaped with some difficulty. The fire brigade were promptly on the spot. Water from the pumping association was turned into the main shaft, which checked theflame§. A hose was then passed down the shaft, and volunteers went down to play on the flames, and ultimately succeeded in extinguishing the fire, which is believed to have originated owing to some fault ja the
flue of the furnace at the 210 feet level to expel the gas. The fire lasted until six this morning. The extent of the damage is not known.
