The principal newspaper of Lorraine, the Zeitung fur Lothringen, published in Metz, has a peculiar and chameleon-)ike life. In the morning it comes out as a half-sheet, in French ; in the evening as a full sheet in German. The former is entitled Prender Edition, the latter ZweUe Ausgabe. Borne newspaper proprietors of London have been conferring on their liability te be sued for libellous reports. They do not ask for exemption from responsibility, hut that the law may give the newspapers the right to sue the speaker of the libel for the amount of the damages and costa. This seems reasonable enough. It is a hard rule that lets off the utterer of a libellous speech and punishes the reporter. An English reviewer points out the fact that at the present time it is the novel, and nor the ballad, that forms the nation, and that the school of sensational writers, who almost monopolise the popular reading of two countries, are doing the English language a mischief that can hardly be cured. The still worse effect upon the public taste and morals of such novels as are poured forth from the pens of the Braddons, the Broughtons, the De La Raines (“ Ouida”) the Wpoda, and many more, cannot be measured.
