A TOUCHING STORY.

The following story, which comes from Southland, is told by the Bruce Herald 1 otara is very scarce, in great demaud, and consequently exceedingly valuable. A speculative sawmiiler, who, for convenience sake, we will designate by the first letter of the alphabet, conceived the idea that a quantity of totara was to be found iu a certain bush, the possession of which would prove exceedingly profitable. He had a man in his employ m whose integrity and fidelity he placed the most implicit confidence. This man we shall call 8., and he was despatched by his employer to find the coveted totara. B. was away many weeks, but at last returned with a beaming countenance, and imparted to A. the agreeable news that he had discovered a splendid piece of totara bush, minutely described the locality, dilating eloquently upon its many advantages, A. was overjoyed, made out a check for B’s wages and wished co add a handsome douceur, but B. nobly declined the latter, saying that he scorned to accept extra remuneration for merely doing his duty. A. however raised B. ’s wages on the spot and promised to make him manager of the mill be intended immediately to start in the newly-found bush. in this arrangement B. silently acquiesced and A. gleefully departed to the Government offices to make application for the prize. His feelings underwent a marked change when he was blannly informed by a po.itc official to whom he confided the object of his visit, that the identical piece of bush for which be intended to apply had been secured nearly a week before by 6. A. is anxious for an interview 7 with 8., who did not make any in quiries about the post of manager of the new mill.
