Auckland, September 3. The Berar, which arrived to-day from London, brings 801 immigrants—all well. Eighteen hundred shares in the National Insurance Co were applied for within three hours this afternoon.

At a meeting of the Thames Rifle Association, held last night, some correspondence from Australia was read relative to sending over representatives from New Zealand to compete at the Intercolonial match at Melbourne. Wanganui will send two men, and the Thames four, including the champion. The Association will also with Major Atkinson, asking what Otago will do. A Committee was appointed to further tho objects sought. The Manager of the B’.nk of New Zealand was charged, under the Quartz Crushing Machines Regulation and Inspection Act, with neglecting to use the register provided by the Government for entering gold. He was fined L 5, the Magistrate saying he had no option in the matter. The Manager of the Bank will appeal, on the ground that the register supplied by the Inspector has no columns for pennyweights and grains. Thi Bank of New Zealand is in communication with the Government with a view to the alteration of the register. The share market is dull.
Tauranga, September 3. A boy named Green has been killed bj falling timber.
Alexandra, September 3. The aukati at Otorohunga will be enforced in two months.
NF.w Plymouth, September 3. The champion race between Fox and Delaney, for LIOO a-side, will come off shortly.
Hokitika, September 3. Peter Mulvey, for shooting at Hugh Calder with intent to kill, was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment.
Christchurch, September 3. Captain Baldwin, who is going through the Provinces in the interest of the National Insurance Company, left to-night in tfie Paterson for Wellington and Auckland. 20,000 shares were applied for here in two days, and applications are still coming in. The prospectus of the Lyttelton Gas Company has been issued. The capital is L 7,500, in 1,500 shares of L 3 each. Mr R. Cobh, manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, and recently a partner in tho firm of Cohb and Sawtell, died to-day from an attack of low fever.
A meeting held last night to consider the erection of a market bouse, appointed a committee to confer with the City Council on the matter.
Timaru, September 3. The Duke of Edinburgh has been sold by auction. The hull and rigging fetched L 205, and sundries L 45. The vessel would have brought more bad not the purchaser become liable to the lessees of the Government landing service for damages by blocking up the passage for boats.
