Melbourne, August 27.—Country flour is firm, at Ll4 ss. There is no wheat in the market; 6s 9d is asked. Feeding oats are active at 5s 3d; milling do are at 5s 9d to 6s. Maize is easier at 4s Bd. Kerosene is in better demand at Is Bd. In candles a fair business has been doing at Hid. The market has been cleared of quicksilver at 4s 3d. Sugars are in fair request ; quotations being Mauritius, medium white L 39 to L 39 10s ; white, L 39 15s; yellow counters, L 35 to L 35 10s; greys, L3B. Calcutta woolpacks, irregular weight, aro at 3s 6d to 3s Bd. Tobaccos are steady. Beer in glass is still scarce. Hennessy’s case brandy is at LI 7s. Currants are at Lls.

London, August 23. —The Bank rate of discount is 4 per cent. A large influx of bullion has taken place. Monetary stocks are dull. New Zealand Consolidated Fives are at 107£, and do Slx.es at 113. Union Bank of Australia shares are 434. Tallow, oils, petroleum, and hides are unaltered. Copper is firm at LBl to LB3 ; Australian is at L9l. Tin is active; Straits is at Ll2B to L 129. New Zealand hemp has been sold at an advance of LI. The wheat market has improved. Adelaide wheat has been cleared by French buyers at 67s to C9s ; and finer quality fetched 70s to 72a. Handed Adelaide flour is worth 3Gs to 49s per 2801bs, according to quality. The wool sales closed firmly, the French buyers taking nearly two-thirds of the quantity offered. This is not considered satisfactory in regard to the English manufacturing trade. A special unpublished telegram from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited, dated London, 23rd August, says .—“The wool sales closed firmly on the 16th. They comprise about 200,000 bales, of which 120,000 have been taken for the Continent. Tallow is in good demand—mutton at 435, and beef at 41s per cwt. Leather, best sides, may be quoted at Is l)d per lb. Wheat —the probable deficiency of the present harvest if estimated to be 15 per cent, but although short in quantity, the quality is good. New Zealand hemp has risen 30s per ton since last report.”
