Tuapeka.— Messrs Hunter and Goodfcllow have commenced work on their contract on the Tuapeka railway. The scene of their present operations is near Chalmcr’s Halfway-house. — Mr Thomas Coop, long known as telegraph linc-inan, has received the appointment of postmaster at Roxburgh, fa place'of Air Afrcd Hale. —A reheating in the case of tho police against Dapp was granted, on tho application of the defendant that, had he had legal assistance, he believed the verdict would be reversed. The case was heard on the 21st inst., before Mr Warden Wood. The evidence now given for the defence was that bottles and decanters labelled “rum” and “ brandy” were placed on Hie table expressly for the convenience of Mrs Lapp’s friends, without any intention of offering any for sale. Mr Wood dismissed the case, observing that the evidence for the defence was overwhelming, but expressed a very strong doubt as to the credibility of the witnesses.-It is rumored that a branch of the National Bank is shortly to be opened in Tapamii.—Messrs Morrison and Irvine, the contractors for tho Manuka Creek portion of the Lawrence and Tokomairiro railway, have sub-let a portion of the line to Messrs M’Kenzio, who were recently qn fa ß Cfatjty Ifae nj. Cromwrll.-dVIr Fergus, the newly-appointed district engineer, will enter upon his duties at once.—The petition in favor of the railway extension to Cromwell, which was lately circulated through the district, was signed, we are informed, by 450 of the male residents. Had time permitted, a very much larger number of signatures could have been obtained. The petition, with the signatures, was entrusted to the care of Mr V. Fyke, M.H.R., for transmission to his Honor the Superintendent, who will present it.-- Ar<jus.
