RECREATION RESERVES FOR LEITH WARD.

A large number of the ratepayers of Leith Ward assemble I at White’s Qaeen’s Rote! last evening, m answer to an announcement signed by Messrs Barnes and Heovos, the representatives of the Ward in the City Council The meeting was called for the purpose of considering the present state of the old Botanical Gardens and the King street reserve. His Worship the Mayor was called to the chair, and asked the indulgence of the meeting to allow him to read some reports which he had obtained from the i own Clerk with respect to the subjects to be taken into consideration that evening, i hey were as follow : Re. Old Botanical Gardens.—The Old Botanical Gardens are a recreation reserve, the management whereof is by Ordinance vested in the Council, though some years ago, when the Corporation had no money, the Government resumed the temporary management of the Gardens, The land cannot be let for building purposes. Re Chinese Gardens.—The Chinese Gardens, Great King street, w.cre let in September, 1807, for three years, at LjQ per annum. The lease was renewed, so that it runs out on Sth September, 1873. Total rent so far received from A hj Poe and Co., L 157 10s, Or. Barniw assured the meeting that it would be a matter of very little ex pens* to till up the portions of the gardens which had been washed away. It was fast becoming a necessity to make a street in the immediate vicinity of the gardens ; and the earth so removed might be used for the purpose of filling up the portion washed away. It would not then cost a great deal to lay it out as a public reserve for recreation purposes. With reference to the Chinese reserve, in its present state, bo thought it a nuisance to the neighborhood. A great deal had had been said of the improvements effected by the Chinese ; but ho might state that all that had been done in the way of drainage had been done by the City Council. He was in favor of the Council resuming possession of the ground, and having it laid out for recreation purposes. It was stated that persons would rent the ground, lay it out with plants, and also allow the public access to it during the day. The money received would be spent on improving the ground. He had give# notice of motion that a similar fence be put round ttye gardens as round the Southern Recreation Reserve. Cr. Reeves said the first information that he had received of the meeting was adr vertisement convening it, kindly called by Messrs Barnes and Reeves.—'(Laughter.) He expressed himself generally as concurring with Cr. Barnes's remark regarding the old Botanical Gardens. Regarding the King street reserve, it was plain to all parties that the playground attached to the North Dunediu School was inadequate. He believed before long another school would be erected, and therefore it was the more urgent that accomodation sufficient for the requirements of the children should be provided.—(Applause.) The following resolutions were then carried : Dr Richardson moved, and Mr Motrr seconded “ That the opinion of this meeting is that the City Council be requested to take into consideration the state of the Old Bot mical Gardens Reserve, with a view to restoring as far as possible the ground to its forme* state, but especially with a view to laying it down iu grass.” Mr C. Smith moved, and Mr Hajirop seconded—“ That his Worship the Mayor and the Councillors of the Ward be appointed a deputation to wait upon his Honor the Deputy-Superintendent, and request that steps be taken to complete the embankment for the purpose of damming back the Leith into its original channel, so as to facilitate the operations of the City Council in carrying out the previous resolution.” Mr Wright moved-“ That the opinion of this meeting is that the City Council be requested to terminate the existing lease with the Chinamen now in possession, to fence in the same, and to lay it out for the original purposes for which it was intended—viz., a recreation ground for the benefit of the citizens, allowing time for the present tenants to remove their plants, &c,” Mr C. Street, one of the members of the Dunedin School Committee, was highly gratified at the resolutions which the meeting had adopted so unanimously. From what he heard, he was led to believe that a misconception had gone abroad as to the resolution of the committee, passed the previous evening. Their wish was not to monopolise the reserve for the benefit of the children attending the icfco?! adjacent to it, but <

merely that they, with other children, might have access to it, and he was pleased their views had met with the concurrence of the meeting. Votes of thanks were accorded to the chairman, and Messrs Barnes and Beeves for attending the meeting and expressing their views, and the meeting separated. Before leaving the room, the greater portion of those present attached their names to a memorial, requesting the Corporation to carry out the resolutions of the meeting.
