Wellington, August 27. A deputation of Nelson members waited upon the Premier to-day, to ascertain definitely the views of the Government respecting the proposed Nelson and Greymouth railway. The Premier said he would insert a clause in the railway schedule of this session, authorising the Government to obtain a working survey of the line. Though there was no intention of asking for an appropriation this session, be would place the matter in such a position as to make it incumbent upon the present or any succeeding Government to execute the work. The Government would waive the land security, and place the line in the same position as other main lines in the Colony. It is understood that the Government intend to press the Provincial Loans Bill. There is likely to he a c’ose fight. An inquiry regarding the grounding of the Lady Bird will be held on Saturday. The inquiry regarding the William Tapscott was continued to-day,. Mr Muecb, master boatbuilder, and Eutherford, carpenter on board H.M.S. Eotario, examined the William Tapscott to-day, and report her unseaworthy. The beams are likely to deflect, and the ship’s sides are in danger of collapsing, while the oakum is rotten. The Governor has requested the captain of the Eosario to give an opinion. The wreck of the Rangitolo is stationary. The Civil Service Club has been successfully opened. August 28. The report of the examination of the William Tapscott, made by direction of Captain Challis of H.M.S. Eosario, is very unfavorable. The examiners found that the ship made twelve inches of water in twelve hours, during the night. The caulker of the 1 osario found on caulking that the timbers were all rotten. The examination is still continuing. The general opinion is that the vessel cannot leave the harbor. Auckland, August 27. An old man named Thomas Abel attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself. In the libel action, Dyes v Henderson, the plaintiff’s case has closed, and the Judge has given the defendant leave to move for a nonsuit. Timaru, August 27. There is a heavy south-east pale blowing. The Fairy Queen parted one anchor, but is holding well. The schooner Duke of Edinburgh was beached, and her crew saved on a robe. The vessel will probably be got off The brig Silver Lining and ketch Wanderer are holding well. August 28. After dark last night the brig Fairy Queen parted her second anchor, and came ashore. She struck the rocks, aud butrped a big hole in her bottom. A rocket line was thrown over the vessel, and the crew of nine men landed quickly. When the last man left the vessel, the mainmast went over the side of the brig. She afterwards sheered off the rocks, and was washed up on the beach. The galley fire or lamp then capsized, and sot fire to the vessel ; but the waves washing over it prevented its spreading. Alter 9 o’clock the ketch Wanderer broke adrift, and rapidly headed in shore. She struck full against the Fairy Queen, and her mast went by the board. The ketch afterwards slewed off, and was washed up on to the beach to the northward. The crew of three men were eventually saved by jumping into the surf. The wind dropped before eleven, but the sea increased. At midnight the brig Silver Lining was observed drifting shorewards, but a land wind suddenly sprung up and took her to sea. The cargo of timber of the Duke of Edinburgh is now being discharged. Such bad weather has not been known here for a long time. Oamaru, August 27. The weather is stormy and wet. The sea is rough, with a heavy swell. The Emile and Scotsman are in danger of coming ashore. The Samson cannot take passengers or cargo, and will be detained until the storm subsides. A concert on behalf of the Hospital proved very successful. There was a large attendance, and the proceeds will probably amount to more than L4O. August 28.

Two coal-laden vessels, just in from Newcastle, were wrecked last night. They are the brig Emile, owned by Messrs Grave and MTntosh, of this port, and the Scotsman, of Newcastle. The former was insured for L 1,200, the latter only partly insured. All lives were saved by the rocket brigade, under the direction of Capt Sewell. Both vessels have gone to pieces. There was a heavy north-cast gale of wind all day yesterday. The brigs Emile and Scotsman, from Newcastle, coal laden, drove on shore, the former about 9.30 p.m., the latter at 12. The crews were saved by the rpeket brigade, under Captain Sewell, after great difficulty. The Scotsman is owaed at Newcastle. The Emile was valued at 1.2,600, but her cargo and that of the Scotsman are supposed to be uninsured. The weather is now fine and the sea going down fast.
